“Words in the Fire” by Patrick Watson // Adventures in Your Own Backyard (2012)

Patrick Watson’s new album (out now on Domino) has a sort of strange mystic beauty about it, as the melodies and vocals and instrumentation seems to exist from another time. Everything feels fresh and new, but at the same time it’s all so warm and familiar and inviting. Watson has always been known for his voice which hovers somewhere between Antony Hegarty and Devandra Banhart, but after this album, it’s the songs themselves that stand out strongest with subtle haunting backing vocals and twinkling guitar lines and piano keys that float by like cast off embers from some late-summer bonfire that you and your friends have before scattering back to your corners (of universities or careers) across the country. It’s a lovely album, and the standout track is “Words in the Fire”, which is as representative as the sounds described as any. Highest recommendation for fans of Fleet Foxes, Devendra Banhart, and Grizzly Bear

“Her Fantasy”

Matthew Dear returns, tantalizing us with the spirited bounce and vigor of “Her Fantasy.” The song is the first off Beams, slated for release August 28th on Ghostly International, and will be released as a single on June 5th. The track is fun, lively, and quite busy at the beginning (and maintins those qualities throughout), but by the end of the six minute, 14 second runtime it has grown and evolved steadily into an irresistible, unstopable force - an excellent, infectious song that has me moving Beams further up my most-anticipated list.

“Apples For The Sun” (The Go! Team Remix) - Frankie Rose

Frankie Rose’s Interstellar will be one of the many records that bubbles up to me unexpectedly at the end of this year, innocently rearing its charming interior to my helpless, musically-addled brain, begging to be let in to some exclusive chart of some kind in my heart. The original, almost hymnal build of “Apples For The Sun” has been given an electric charge by The Go! Team, changing the idyllic lull into a snappier, poppier version of its former self. You can download the remix for free by heading over to the song’s soundcloud page (link).
